The following programmes are an example of how the study stay could be organised.

The school reserves the right to modify the programs published on the page, adapting the recreational activities to the artistic and cultural landscape of the area at certain times.

    Departure after lunch, 15:00. Visit to the fascinating village of the easternmost city in Italy. Visit to the ramparts, the Aragonese castle and the historic cathedral. Otranto is the heart of the history of the Mediterranean, the site of attacks and barbarity perpetrated by the Turks.

    Departure at 15:00. Visit to the main monuments, the Duomo, Palazzo dei Celestini, the church of Santa Croce, the Roman Amphitheatre. A tour through the spires, columns and balconies of the historic centre.

WEDNESDAY

  • Afternoon:– ALTERNATIVE A: BOAT TRIP
    Live a unique experience at the discovery of the spectacular sea caves of Santa Maria di Leuca, on board a boat complete with awning and comfortable aft bridge with ladder. During the trip, a small aperitif will be served. The commander will describe all the caves along the coast on both sides (Adriatic Sea and Ionian Sea).Three hour hike, with two swim stops.
    – ALTERNATIVA B: GRECÌA SALENTINA
    A visit to Soleto, to the magnificent 14th century spire, to the church of S. Stefano famous for its Byzantine frescoes and to the buildings of the historic centre. The tour continues to Sternatia at the baronial palace Granafei, Corigliano where there is the only castle with a baroque facade and the Arco Lucchetti and finally the architectural beauties of Melpignano, the country that every year hosts the “Night of Taranta”. We will visit the remains of an ancient Messapian road and the wrecks of the oak forest that once covered our territory. At Cutrofiano, finally, discover the art of figurines, that is, how terracotta is modelled today with an ancient lathe and an 18th century furnace. The tour will end at the Ceramics Museum in Filomarini Palace.

  • Galatina and its countless beauties, the basilica of Santa Caterina with its frescoes of the fifteenth century depicting the Apocalypse of John, the Genesis, the life of Christ, the apocryphal gospels, the reliquaries, the paintings of the Franciscan cloister with its secrets. Also the apotropaic masks, the stone faces of children crying blood, the headless knight, the beautiful palaces, streets, houses at court and finally the mysteries related to the phenomenon of Tarantism.

    Length: 15 km (half day)
    The tour starts from Salignano with a visit to its imposing tower of defense. Continue to Castrignano del Capo, built on a Roman field, in the bowels of the village to visit the imposing underground oil mill where once the olives were milled. Continuing towards Patù you will find the Centopietre, an enigmatic monument created for funerary purposes and then used as a religious chapel. A look at the hill where once stood the city of Vereto, probably the largest and most important Messapian settlement in Salento.
    We then reach Barbarano, the sanctuary of Leuca Piccola and its hypogean, an ancient pilgrimage destination and stopover for the faithful heading for Leuca. On the way back, stop at the village of Giuliano with its castle and the many apotropaic figures on the palaces of the old town.

SATURDAY

  • ALBEROBELLO AND OSTUNI
    Departure at 8:00 to visit the beautiful and picturesque karst complex of the caves of Castellana. Continue towards Alberobello, a fairytale village known for its typical houses, stone “trulli”, picturesque dry-stone buildings with an original conical shape. The visit will end with a tour of the “white city”, Ostuni.

SUNDAY

  • MATERA
    From 19 January 2019 and for 48 weeks, Matera will be at the centre of the world as the European Capital of Culture. A unique opportunity to learn about the history and traditions of this jewel of our country. Many events will take place during the year ( http://www. matera-basilicata2019. it )
    Departure at 8:00 a. m. Three and a half hours travel. A labyrinth of caves, underground cisterns, noble palaces and much more in the “city of stones”, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. Matera guards the entire path of mankind.

    CYCLE-TOUR BETWEEN FARMS AND CENTURIES-OLD OLIVE GROVES (VALLEY OF THE CUPA)
    A touristic cycle route that ranges between monumental olive groves and farms, many of which were fortified from the sixteenth century onwards. The route revolves around the abbey of S. Maria di Cerrate and the church of S. Maria d’Aurio.

    An excursion among the legendary Massi della Vecchia, huge megaliths placed inside an olive grove between Palmariggi and Minervino. Myths, legends, tales of mythical acchiature that is the treasures hidden in Salento. The mystery of dolmens and menhirs prehistoric monuments that tell a civilization. We will visit the menhir of San Vincenzo, the Scusi dolmen, a Men-an-thol, a cultural area full of charm and magic.

THURSDAY

  • Morning: BREAKFAST IN MASSERIA.
    Itinerant lesson at one of the most characteristic farms of Salento. Breakfast with typical local products will be followed by a guided tour of the dairy to learn about the processes of processing of mozzarella, caciotta and other dairy delicacies. Then there will be a visit to the animals or to the pasture and finally a mini workshop for guests. In addition, a local beekeeper will reveal all the secrets of artisanal honey.

    In her home, Aunt Tata welcomes all those who want to learn how to cook the dishes of typical Salento cuisine. Eggplant parmigiana, potato panzerotti, caponata, the famous carteddhrate and everything that makes your mouth water. Aunt Tata teaches how to cook around a table to end the unforgettable evening delighting the palate with local specialities.

  • Afternoon: OLIVE OIL EXPERIENCE
    The visit of the olive grove and then of the oil mill of an old farm nearby will show participants the entire production process, from grinding to bottling, with tasting followed by taralli, preserves and typical products.
